Switzerland Federal Assembly Council Selects New President

“We will not allow ourselves to be divided”

The neutral nation of Switzerland has officially selected a new President in Foreign Affairs Minister Ignazio Cassis. Cassis is set to precede Guy Parmelin, the Economic Affairs Minister at the start of the new year.

The symbolic Presidential position is peacefully rotated annually between Federal Council members. As current acting Vice President, Cassis claimed 156 out of around 200 possible votes. Cassis will also make history when sworn in on January 1st by being the first Swiss President from Italian-speaking region, Ticino. Health Minister Alain Berset was selected as the nation’s Vice President, ultimately in line for the rotating Presidency in 2023.

One of Cassis’ primary objectives as acting President while simultaneously continuing his duties as one of Switzerland’s top diplomats will be sufficient addressment of the ongoing COVID crisis within & beyond Swiss borders.
